[2026 Edition] Comparing Electronic Charts for Ophthalmology: NAVIS-CL and Other Key Products, and the Strengths of AI Karte
Share this article

Electronic charts for ophthalmology must meet many requirements not found in other departments—integration with examination devices, image filing, schema drawings, and records that separate the right and left eyes. As a result, several types of products coexist in Japan, including products specialized for ophthalmology and products offered by ophthalmic device makers. This article organizes the main electronic chart products for ophthalmology by type and compares the features that can be confirmed in each product's official information. We then introduce the strengths of "AI Karte," an AI-native electronic chart, in the ophthalmology field.

The basics of choosing—such as the difference between specialized and general-purpose types—are covered in Recommended Ophthalmology-Specific Electronic Chart Comparison: The Difference Between Specialized and General-Purpose Types. As a sequel, this article goes a step further and compares specific products by name.

The information on each product is based on what could be confirmed on each company's official website and official announcements as of September 2026. Because features and terms of provision may change, be sure to confirm the latest information with each company when considering adoption. Many products do not publish prices officially, so pricing is not covered in this article.

Four types of electronic charts for ophthalmology

Electronic charts for ophthalmology can be broadly divided into four types according to their origins.

TypeOverviewExample products
Ophthalmology-specializedElectronic charts designed specifically for ophthalmic care, with ophthalmic templates, schema drawings, and examination data import as standardCLIPLA Eye, CLIUS-Cross, MediusCL, eyemet's
Device-makerElectronic charts and filing offered by ophthalmic device makers; their strength is know-how in connecting with their own and other companies' ophthalmic devicesNAVIS-CL (NIDEK; new orders temporarily suspended), IMAGEnet eKarte V5 / V5 Cloud (Topcon Healthcare)
Filing-integratedOphthalmic operations are built by combining an image filing system with an electronic chartClaio + REMORA (Findex)
AI-nativeDesigned with AI as a premise, handling the chart, receipt computer, examinations, and appointments on the same foundationAI Karte Ophthalmology (Pottech)

Even among products labeled "for ophthalmology," where each places the weight of its strengths differs by type. Clarifying first whether your clinic prioritizes "devices and images," "efficiency of input and billing," or "operability in the cloud" keeps the comparison from drifting.

Features of the main products (from official information)

CLIPLA Eye (Clipla Inc.)

A cloud-based electronic chart and receipt computer specialized for ophthalmology. Its official site lists features such as automatic import of examination data, integration with the receipt computer, simultaneous access from multiple devices, use from outside the clinic, and automatic system updates. The company states that it has been adopted by more than 200 facilities (as of June 2025).

CLIUS-Cross (DONUTS Co., Ltd.)

A cloud-based electronic chart for ophthalmology clinics. Officially introduced features include import of numerical and image examination data, viewing of examination devices' analysis data through viewer integration, a schema function that can be edited with a handwriting feel, and integration with the ophthalmology-specific medical information system "NAVIS-Cross." A function that automatically learns frequently used disease names to assist input is also listed.

MediusCL (B-Line Co., Ltd.)

An ophthalmology electronic chart system for clinics. It offers more than 300 examination templates and more than 500 schema drawings, and its official site introduces automatic import of image and numerical data from various examination devices, receipt computer integration with the JMA standard receipt software (ORCA) and PHC Medicom, and a prescription assist function.

eyemet's (FirstMedical Inc.)

An ophthalmology system that integrates electronic chart and filing functions. Officially listed features include automatically pasting examination results (images and numbers) into the chart and image list through connection with medical devices, schema drawing using a pressure-sensitive LCD pen tablet, and integration with the JMA standard receipt software (ORCA). It is described as allowing clinics to choose the functions they need and adopt them in stages, and it also supports filing-only operation.

NAVIS-CL (NIDEK Co., Ltd.)

An electronic chart system for clinics that has been offered by the ophthalmic device maker NIDEK. Officially introduced features include a screen design that carries over the look of paper charts to lower the barrier to migration, schema entry with a handwriting feel using a pressure-sensitive tablet, functions that prevent missed charges and double billing, and a mechanism that automatically reflects medical procedures in accounting after the consultation ends. The Japan Medical Association's standard receipt software (ORCA) is used for the claims function.

Note that the official website states that new orders are temporarily suspended. For facilities that already use it, NIDEK states that it continues to handle additional terminals and licenses, replacements, and so on. In November 2024, NIDEK also announced a collaboration with DONUTS (CLIUS) on jointly developing ophthalmology electronic chart functions that draw on the know-how of NAVIS-CL.

IMAGEnet eKarte V5 / V5 Cloud (Topcon Healthcare)

An ophthalmic electronic chart offered by the Topcon group, an ophthalmic device maker. Its features are described as know-how from developing ophthalmology-specific electronic chart systems since 2004 and a track record of connecting with various companies' ophthalmic medical devices. Both on-premises and cloud versions are offered, and officially introduced functions include findings-entry support, drag-and-drop from past charts, and support for creating data for the medical accounting system.

Claio + REMORA (FINDEX Inc.)

An ophthalmology solution for clinics that combines the image filing system "Claio" with the electronic chart "REMORA (REMORA Cloud)." Officially introduced features include integration with devices such as slit lamps, fundus cameras, OCT, and specular microscopes; automatic import of examination data from refracto-keratometers, non-contact tonometers, Humphrey perimeters, and the like; schema drawing; and accounting integration with WebORCA and others.

Comparison points by feature axis

Because detailed feature differences between products change depending on the time of adoption and option configuration, here we organize them as general tendencies by type.

What matters in comparison is not only "which features exist" but also "how the features connect with one another." If examination data, findings, billing, and appointments are split across separate systems, transcription and checking remain even when all the features are present.

Why AI Karte is strong in ophthalmology

Pottech's "AI Karte Ophthalmology" is an AI-native electronic chart designed with AI as a premise. In light of ophthalmic workflows, it has strengths in the following areas.

  • Structuring ophthalmic examinations by eye: Eleven kinds of examination values—visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure, corneal curvature, OCT, and more—are entered and tracked separately for the right and left eyes. The AI automatically generates findings drafts from the examination values
  • Covering the entire flow of cataract care: Automatic IOL power calculation from axial length; a cataract clinical pathway that automatically lays out the examinations and procedures for surgery → day 1 → day 7 → 1 month; and everything from surgery booking and pre-, intra-, and post-operative records to PDF generation of explanation and consent forms, all on one foundation
  • Device integration: Examination data is automatically imported via DICOM from OCT, fundus cameras, tonometers, autorefractors, perimeters, and more from major makers such as TOPCON, NIDEK, Carl Zeiss, CANON, and TOMEY
  • Integrated receipt computer: The electronic chart and receipt computer are provided as the same product, with built-in automatic billing that supports ophthalmology-specific examination and procedure codes, plus bundling/conflict checks
  • AI assistant: The AI accompanies the entire care flow—diagnostic suggestions, differential diagnosis, examination trend summaries, and personalized explanations for patients
  • Integrated with a patient PHR app: Linked on the same data foundation as the patient app "Potekkun," it connects appointments, pre-visit questionnaires, eye-drop medication reminders, and next-appointment recommendations for post-operative checkups
  • API integration and security: Supports external integration via an OAuth2 gateway, webhooks, and an MCP server (an FHIR gateway is under development). With audit logs for all CRUD operations and full multi-tenant separation, it provides an operating foundation compliant with the three-ministry, two-guideline framework

Whereas existing ophthalmology products have accumulated "optimization for ophthalmic devices and ophthalmic record formats," AI Karte is built on the design philosophy of "consolidating examinations, records, billing, and patient touchpoints on one data foundation, with AI providing support across all of them." Why an AI-native electronic chart shows its strength in ophthalmology is explained in detail in Why AI Karte Is Strong in Ophthalmology. You can see the full picture of its features on the AI Karte Ophthalmology page.

Points to consider when switching from NAVIS-CL

NAVIS-CL has long been used by ophthalmology clinics, and many facilities use it today. New orders are temporarily suspended, but NIDEK states that support for existing facilities continues, so there is no need to switch in a hurry. On the other hand, timings such as terminal replacement, OS support deadlines, lease expiration, and opening a branch clinic are good opportunities to review future operations. When considering a switch, organizing the following points in advance makes things smoother.

  • Handling of past charts and schema drawings: In what form will records accumulated as handwritten schema drawings and paper-chart images be viewable in the new system (data migration, or archive for reference)?
  • Carrying over examination data and images: Can numbers and images imported from examination devices be moved while preserving per-eye and date information?
  • Relationship with the receipt computer (ORCA): Will you continue operating with ORCA integration, or switch to an integrated receipt computer and unify everything from records to billing?
  • Switchover timing and parallel operation: A migration schedule that avoids busy seasons, staff proficiency with the new system, and the period of running in parallel with the old system

With AI Karte Ophthalmology, we present the scope and method of data that can be migrated after checking your current system, and our team carries out the migration work. Because it integrates the receipt computer, you can also move from an ORCA-integrated operation to one where records and billing are handled on the same foundation. For the overall migration process, see the EMR data migration guide, and for switching timing, see when to switch electronic charts.

Three questions for choosing the right product for your clinic

Finally, here are three questions that help when narrowing down products.

  1. How does it connect with your clinic's examination devices? List the makers and models of devices in use or planned, and confirm for each product whether automatic import is possible and whether it uses a standard method such as DICOM or requires individual handling
  2. Is there no break from records to billing? Confirm whether examinations, findings, and prescriptions are reflected directly in billing. If the receipt computer is a separate product, confirm the scope of integration and whether double entry occurs
  3. Can it withstand future expansion of operations? Confirm whether it can support operations several years ahead—performing cataract surgery, opening branch clinics, integrating with patient apps and external services, and using AI

In demos, we recommend actually operating the flow for one typical patient at your clinic (reception → examination → consultation → accounting) from start to finish.

In closing

Electronic charts for ophthalmology include ophthalmology-specialized, device-maker, and filing-integrated products, each with strengths rooted in its origins. Newly added to these is the AI-native type, designed with AI as a premise. Rather than merely lining up which features exist, comparing from the perspective of whether everything from examinations to records, billing, and patient interaction connects as one flow reveals the product that fits your clinic.

Through the provision of AI Karte, Pottech serves as the optimal business partner for clinics—supporting not only better working conditions for physicians, nurses, and medical clerical staff, but also helping clinics achieve to the fullest what they want to accomplish.
