Why AI Karte Suits Ophthalmology: Seven Strengths of an AI-Native Electronic Chart
Share this article

An electronic chart for ophthalmology must satisfy many requirements that other departments do not share. Recording examination values such as visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and refraction for each eye; comparing OCT and fundus camera images over time; managing cataract surgery from preoperative calculation to postoperative checkups; and handling unique billing rules such as the contact-lens examination fee. "AI Karte," developed by Pottech, is an AI-native electronic chart designed with AI as a premise, and its ophthalmology edition is designed to handle these requirements on a single foundation. This article organizes why AI Karte suits ophthalmology into seven strengths. Each theme is explored in more depth in its own article.

Why "connection" matters for an ophthalmology electronic chart

Ophthalmic care may look as if examinations, consultations, surgery, and accounting are independent of one another, but in reality they are tightly linked.

  • The physician references examination values measured by the orthoptist (ORT) during consultation and writes findings
  • What examinations were performed becomes the direct basis for billing and the rezept (claim)
  • In cataract surgery, the IOL power is determined from preoperative axial length measurement, and examinations are repeated on a fixed schedule after surgery
  • In chronic diseases such as glaucoma, trends in intraocular pressure, visual field, and OCT are followed over years, and continued eye-drop use must be supported

When these are split across separate systems or paper, transcription, double entry, and verification work pile up. In choosing an ophthalmology electronic chart, what greatly affects efficiency and safety is not only whether individual functions exist, but whether everything from examinations to accounting—and even interactions with patients—is connected as continuous data. For an overview of product selection, see also Recommended Ophthalmology-Specific Electronic Chart Comparison and Ophthalmology Electronic Chart Product Comparison 2026.

Strength 1: Per-eye entry and history for 11 ophthalmic examination types

With AI Karte Ophthalmology, 11 examination types—including visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure, corneal curvature, and OCT—can be entered separately for the right and left eyes and accumulated as history. The range of supported examinations is broad: from basic examinations such as visual acuity (uncorrected and corrected), intraocular pressure (NCT and GAT), and refraction by autorefractometer; to anterior-segment examinations such as slit-lamp microscopy, corneal endothelial cell examination, anterior chamber depth measurement, and pachymetry; static and kinetic perimetry; electrophysiological tests such as ERG and VEP; and the Schirmer test and axial length measurement.

Because the right/left distinction is built into the structure, R/L mix-ups are less likely and comparison with past values becomes easier. For details, see Recording Ophthalmic Examination Values Correctly by Eye.

Strength 2: Automatic import from examination devices via DICOM

Ophthalmology is a department with a particularly large number of examination devices. AI Karte Ophthalmology automatically imports data via DICOM from examination devices such as OCT, fundus cameras, tonometers, and autorefractometers. It supports devices from major manufacturers including TOPCON, NIDEK, Carl Zeiss, CANON, TOMEY, Reichert, HAAG-STREIT, KOWA, and CREWT, and standard integration is possible with any DICOM-compatible device.

Images are stored in cloud storage, so high-resolution images can be saved and viewed without worrying about capacity. Reducing manual entry and transcription errors, and being able to reference past examinations across the board from the consultation screen, pays off in ophthalmology, where examinations carry so much weight. This is explained in DICOM Integration and Cloud Image Management in Ophthalmology.

Strength 3: Ophthalmic templates, schema entry, and AI finding drafts

In ophthalmic records, anterior-segment and fundus findings are often recorded as drawings (schema). AI Karte Ophthalmology comes with ophthalmic templates and supports schema entry. In addition, the AI automatically proposes findings from examination results (finding drafts), which—together with reference to past charts—streamlines the documentation unique to ophthalmology.

As part of its AI-native design, the AI also accompanies the entire care flow: automatic SOAP structuring from voice, diagnostic suggestions and differential diagnosis, and summaries of examination trends. AI suggestions are only drafts; the premise is that the physician makes the final judgment and confirms the record. For schema and AI findings, see Ophthalmic Schema Entry and AI Finding Drafts; for voice input, see How to Reduce Ophthalmology Chart-Documentation Time with AI Voice Input.

Strength 4: IOL power calculation and a clinical pathway supporting cataract surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the core services of an ophthalmology clinic. AI Karte Ophthalmology has an IOL power calculation function that automatically calculates the optimal IOL power from the axial length before cataract surgery. Furthermore, as a cataract clinical pathway, it automatically expands the examinations and procedures for surgery → postoperative day 1 → day 7 → 1 month.

On the surgery-management side, surgery scheduling, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative records, and PDF generation of explanation and consent forms are all handled on the same foundation. For postoperative checkups, it also supports AI next-appointment recommendations. See IOL Power Calculation for Cataract Surgery and the Electronic Chart, Digitizing the Cataract Clinical Pathway, and, for consent forms, Creating Ophthalmic Surgery Explanations and Consent Forms with AI.

Strength 5: Automatic billing with an integrated rececon that supports ophthalmology-specific codes

AI Karte Ophthalmology is an integrated-rececon type that provides the electronic chart and the rececon (receipt computer) as a single product. There is no need to introduce a separate receipt computer; it has a built-in automatic billing engine that supports ophthalmology-specific examination and procedure codes, performs bundling and mutual-exclusion checks, and generates everything through to review and submission files in one continuous flow.

Because the AI verifies the consistency of insurance claims in real time and detects returned-claim risk in advance, ophthalmic billing—with its many examination types and complex correspondence to disease names—can be supported by the system itself. For the approach to audit deductions, see Reducing Ophthalmic Rezept Audit Deductions; for the CL examination fee, see A Complete Guide to Contact-Lens Examination Fee Billing Rules.

Strength 6: AI drafts of referral letters, medical certificates, consent forms, and other documents

Ophthalmology produces a wide variety of documents: referral letters, medical certificates, surgery explanations, consent forms, and more. In AI Karte Ophthalmology, the AI automatically drafts these ophthalmic documents, and templates can be customized to match the clinic's own formats. The AI assistant also supports personalizing explanatory text for patients, shortening preparation time while keeping the quality of explanations consistent.

Strength 7: Integrated provision with the patient PHR app "Potekkun"

A major feature of AI Karte Ophthalmology is that it is fully linked on the same data foundation with the patient-facing PHR app "Potekkun." Appointments, questionnaires, prescriptions, and payments connect in real time.

  • Appointments and patient cards: Hospital search, booking, and QR patient cards completed on a smartphone
  • Questionnaires: Answered on the web before the visit, with the AI supplementing the SOAP in the clinic
  • Medication management: Management of eye drops and prescription drugs, with reminders via AI automatic import
  • Accounting: Notification of medical fees and digital receipt PDFs
  • LINE integration: LINE login, push notifications, and appointment reminders

In ophthalmology, where eye-drop treatment often continues for a long time, mechanisms that support patients in continuing their medication are directly tied to the quality of care. See Eye-Drop Management and Patient App Integration in Ophthalmology and, for long-term follow-up, Streamlining Glaucoma Follow-Up with the Electronic Chart.

The foundation for using it with confidence: API integration and security

Underpinning the seven strengths is a foundation built for extensibility and safety. AI Karte Ophthalmology supports an OAuth2-compliant external API gateway, webhooks, an MCP server that serves as the standard access boundary for AI, the LINE Messaging API, and more, enabling API integration with external systems (a FHIR gateway for the medical information exchange standard is under development).

On the security side, it provides a multi-tenant configuration that completely separates data for each medical institution, audit logs of all CRUD operations, Passkey authentication, and AI access-boundary control via MCP—an operational foundation compliant with the "three ministries, two guidelines." The full set of features can be reviewed on the AI Karte Ophthalmology page.

In closing

Ophthalmology is a department in which examination values, images, surgery, billing, and interactions with patients are closely intertwined. That is precisely why a design in which AI supports everything across a single data foundation—rather than patching each area with separate systems—demonstrates its power. Per-eye examination entry, DICOM device integration, schema drawings with AI finding drafts, cataract surgery support, ophthalmology-specific automatic billing, document creation, and integrated provision with a PHR app—AI Karte Ophthalmology aims to support nearly every scene of daily ophthalmic practice.

Some facilities currently using NIDEK's "NAVIS-CL" may be considering a switch on occasions such as terminal replacement. For a comparison of the main products including NAVIS-CL, and the points to organize when switching, see [2026 Edition] Comparing Electronic Charts for Ophthalmology.

Through the provision of AI Karte, Pottech serves as the optimal business partner for clinics—supporting not only better working conditions for physicians, nurses, and medical clerical staff, but also helping clinics achieve to the fullest what they want to accomplish.
